Who is Who, and Who is Henna?

To continue my blog posts about introducing some interesting people here in Rovaniemi, I would like to welcome....

Name: Henna-Emilia

her task was just to give a simple smile :)
It is not easy to catch a good photo of her :) And if I can get a picture of her, she s always making some jokes :)

...representing two owls,  think we did a good job,  or what would you say Henna?

So lets start the introducing part again.  Here comes Henna-Emilia:

luckily my camera can shoot several pictures in time :)

Nickname: Henna
Home Country: Finland/Suomi
Course of Studies: Toursim
What do I think about the Germans?:
"I have always convinced to myself that the Germans are not that special, but somehow I find myself always around them, so they really are amazing, or they must have increase really effective"

Things you should know about her:

She likes Tequlia, is the complete opposite of a shy Fin,

likes to talk a lot in finnish[unluckily I am not able to follow the conversations, but I am trying ], but is a little bit lazy when it comes up to talk in English. But I had a lot of interesting english conversations with her.
Like my tutor Vesa, she is also a Tutor for some of the international Exchange-Students. But she also takes care a lot of me.
Two weeks ago, she cooked a typically finnish meal for me ( meatballs and potatos; and another meal, which I am not able to remind the correct writing). I really enjoyed it!

As a well-educated and brought up guy

Papz & Mum @ 1st of September, Date of Departure at Stuttgartista Airport

[Thanks Mum and Papz], I offered her the same Services,

Spätzle mit Hähnchen...and she survived the meal, so I could be proud of me.

Yes, it was a nice party, with lots of drinks

I really like her, she s a very good friend of mine, and  also helps me to cope with the finnish Language [ Hey Onkel Axel un Opa Hans, hab euren Rat befolgt, und mir ein finnisches Mädel gesucht um die Sprache besser zu lernen :) ] .

It is always not easy, to learn Finnish, but I am trying...maybe thats reason why our language course at the university is called "Survival Finnish".  Everytime when I get teached a new word of her,  I tell her the german translation,  and she is making progress in learning a litle bit german. She likes the pronounciation/sound of the following sentence: "Du bist mein Liebling!" / You are my lovely dear!
And of course I should mention, that she always makes jokes about me, when I am saying..."somebody is drunken",  :)

Me, Mari & Henna

Sometimes I got the impression, that Henna is a little bit crazy ( Mari, best friend of Henna, confirmed it :D ), I guess that somethimes it s better for us men, not to understand the women :)  But she s always there when I would like to talk and always honest!
So all in all, I would like to thank you for your interesting opinion about the germans. I would like to say thanks for the finnish meals, thanks for taking care of me, and maybe we can have some more meals together in the future? :P
For the moment, this was the last update for introducing people :)
I ll hope I could gave you a better insight in some interesting identities.

Of course I ll have some more people I would like to introduce(Mari,Holger,Sebastian,Shiva....). And you will be introduced within this month :)
But I will continue now to write about some cultural posts and about some other interesting experiences I made here in Finnland, so stay tuned and decent for the next update, comming online on Saturday!

PS: By the way Vesa, before I forget it,  we also wanted to cook the next time,  maybe we can combine it with a  bottle of Koskenkorva or Whiskey? Just let me know.

Introducing IV...Vesa

So let's check out what do we got here.

Home Country: Finland/Suomi
Home City: Kuusamo , that little town next to Ruka
Course of Studies: Hotel & Restaurant Management @ Rovaniemi University of Applied Sciences
What comes in my mind, when I am thinking about Germany?:

"Control freaks, that are constantly yelling, while eating Sauerkraut and drinking Beer in leather pants"

Interesting point :) Thanks for you honesty while answering my Questions :) Now I would like to tell you something about my good friend Vesa.

Vesa, is my finnish Tutor. He takes care of almost everything concerning any kind of problems, questions, orientations, just everything. When I first came to Rovaniemi, he was there at the airport and catched me up.
Vesa and Me at the Cartoon Party :)
So what can I tell you about him. Well I know him now for nearly 2 months. He helped me to get started here in Rovaniemi in every aspect.

Me and my tutor!
It is not easy to describe a person, you know only for almost two months. But I can say, that he is a very good guy, talkative( the complete opposite of a shy Fin :) ), trustable, helpful, and just awesome!

Another point I would like to mention is, that he is also addicted to the music group "System of a Down"!

System of a Down - Aerials
Vesa, want to add a comment about this amazing song? "damn you Claudio, now it is gonna ring in my head the whole night" :D
All I can say, is Thanks,  Thanks for everything! Thanks for getting started with the finnish Culture, the finnish People, the Parties at your place, the University, just everything!

You are a good guy, and keep that in mind my friend!
If you ever want to visit me in Germany, just let me know!

And of course, thanks for the interesting cultural aspects about Finland and the finnish people. Without your interesting talks, I would have not been able to write such interesting and humouros stories about my stay here in Rovaniemi :)

Comming on Wednesday

On Wednesday I would like to introduce to you 2 interesting Fins, Vesa and Henna. I ll hope I will survive until this day, if both of them know that there will be a post about them :)

So take this and see you on the next Update :)

PIMP UP MY...

Now it's time to "PIMP UP MY RIDE"... okay just jokin. We are here not on MTV,  okay...try again.

Now it's time to PIMP UP MY Appartment.

The room, in which I am living in, isnt much decorative and it doesn't give you a happy feeling. Especially now, when the dark is coming more and more, and the people like to share community and each other more and more.

So it was the best time to prepare and upgrade for the Appartment.
Our fridge
To make everyone smile, when he is gonna taking something out of the fridge, I had to print out the finnish milk commercial. :)
And to make everyone stop laughing, I thought, it would be a good idea, to introduce a cleaning plan, meaning: Every changing week, it s up to an other room to clean at least the bathroom, toilet, ground, kitchen, and all the other creepy stuff.
To realize the plan, I thought, it would be a good idea, to not set up a certain time limit to clean,  Hello I mean, We are not girls. We don't want to check up something like " oh, its friday, You have to clean up the whole appartment at 16.45 and 21 seconds.
We were man, so we still care about cleaness, but we are more flexible, so I just made the proposal to myself, about setting up a time limit for three days, so everybody is free to find a comfortable day for him.

Unfortunately for my roommates/ lucky for me, I didnt slept over this weekend in my room, and I was whole sunday on a trip, so I missed the cleaning part. But Benjamin was so friendly to do it for me too, so I have to pay him back sometimes.

Let's see if this cleaning experiment will work, at the begining, I thought I would be the bad guy, or how Henna-Emilia told me, " You are now the bitch of the appartment" ; but I turned out that I thought the wrong way, everyone approved  to my cleaning plan, and I can be proud of my self now.
I got one special compliment by Benjamin:

Thanks for the nice post!
Fully motivated by this approval,  Benjamin, Christophe and I thought, it would be a nice idea, to cover the whole appartment with some interesting things...to say at least:

Life Quality significatnly improved!
To warn all of our entering guests, we put this sign on our front door:

Sad but True,  but let's see. Time, Practice and more Learning
As you already know, the whole appartment including six flatmates, we all share one room with a shower and a toilet. So everyone has to sometimes to hurry up a little bit :)

As it was said in one of Tarantino's famous movie "Pulp Fiction" :

Until now, we got not problems with it. Everyone has is own turns, and as I mentioned before, Men are flexible, so no problem to worry about.

And to have atleast something typically german in the appartment, I put this next to my door:

It keeps me remembering how good the german beer is, although I have some very serious discussions with Benjamin about the belgium beer, which is "according to his opinion" the best beer in the world.

I ll hope you enjoyed my Blog Update.

I still have enough materials, pictures, and some funny interesting expierences, I want to share with you, but I ll have to also take care of my university work, so stay tuned, and keep your eyes open for the next blog update, released on wednesday!

Greetings
lau

Introducing III...Andrej & Juraj

In this post, I would like to Introduce my roommate Andrej, and another flatmate Juraj.

Here are some keyfacts, about the guy, with who I am sharing my 11 square meters- castle/ or better say room :)

What do I think about Germany:

"I have not live int Germany, I just been there 1 time. I don't know German people, but I know Claudio. Knowing Claudio, I have in mind only good things to say about Germany"

What you should know about him: He is doing a lot of sport, which is called "JUDO", some kind of "Wrestling". And he is very successfull. Last tournament, he easily screwed up all the finnish people here in Rovaniemi, so he got an invitation to participate at a large tournament in Helsinki. So you better don't make him mad ;)
But Andrej is a very handsome, and talkative roomate( especially when it comes to skype with his girlfriend :) ).

I wish you all the best! Rock this place. And thanks for the honest and nice words about Germany!

The next guy I want to introduce to you is Juraj!

Name: Juraj
Nickname: Duri
Home Country:  Slowakia

Juraj, the guy in the middle :)
One thing you should know about Juraj,  he has an interesting style of cooking. You can easily smell from the outside when he is cooking. :) And we make a lot of jokes about him, when it comes to cooking( check the second upcoming post about introducing the appartment upgrade :) )

On the other side, Juraj is a very friendly, and cool roommate. I can always have interesting talks with him, especially about girls :)

thanks for it!

final Project,Mr.Bean, Salmiakki and Politics

Good evening everyone! I ll hope you are all fine, and have had a nice weekend,  hopefully with no hangovers and some nice accompanies :P

The last week was fully stressed for me, I had to arrange a lot of things concerning my pratical internship here in Rovaniemi.
Also I had to write an Exam in the course called "Basic of Embedded Systems", but I made it. As a last project, to show up your learned skills, everyone had to finnish this course with a self made project.

So I thought to myself, why not confront them with some present issues about renewable energies?
To make it as simple as possible, I add the following picture, to get them introduced to the topic:
Man it took me half an hour to create this image...feel free to say " Good Work Lau :) "
The idea behind this project was to built up a wind level indication systems. So that you can set up, how strong the wind is, and then there should be an graphical output interpretation looking something like this:

Altera DE 2 Board, Wind Level Indication Systems

Okay, don't worry, I won't go too much into details.  But it was atleast good, to take something from your home studies. I mean, I like to study all those Information technology,  but I don't have in plan to become a Software Engineer. So maybe I ll should do it like Mr. Bean? What would you say?

so tell me, am I in the wrong business? :D

Luckily, I made the exam, and all my reports for it, so now let's move over to another interesting part...the weekend. This weekend I was on a meeting of a finnish political party, on a Halloween party, and on a long nature trio.

As I already mentioned, the guys here in Finland are crazy after a drink called "Salmari / Salmiakki".
It is a very special kind of taste,  we middle-european-people are not used to it, so I would like to show you my reaction and the reaction of my good friend Ralf, when it came to drink it:

Ralf @ Fisu and Salmiakki,  enjoy it Man!
Of course, it looks like just a normal drink, but I can assure you, inside you can feel it like this:

I just can't wait to introduce you to all this typical finnish drink :) There will be so much fun!
Okay, so we set up the drinking part of the weekend. But as you know, there is much more than just behind drinking. Normally you feel better when you can talk to some people. Let me introduce you an interesting way of communication in Finland:

I think that it is also possible to observe this part of communication in Germany, or in other countries. So take away your phones and start talking to other people. And also start listening!

Isabelle, the women on the right in the picture, is going to be elected for a regional council, so ll I hope she will make it. On friday evening, she invited me to join a "political" meeting, to have some drink s in a bar called "Hemmingways". The purpose was just to enjoy time together with some finnish people, talk a little about politics, and of course drink something together.

Politics take care of the youth today, by giving some presents(we call it Lobbyism :) , compare the next Image) for the young people, to enjoy some fun with each other, and take consideration about some issue of the world today's problem.

Or just to sum up: Politics helping high/un-educated people to have sex.
But I have to confess, it was a very interesting evening. I was the only one, who didn't spoke any finnish, so thanks to my tutor Vesa, who was so friendly to translate the most interesting things and conversations for me.
My Tutor Vesa
I don't want to mention too much, but I am going to introduce him to you on the next post :) [ stay surprised Vesa... :) ]

Best Regards
Lau

Introducing II...Benjamin & Christophe

Okay, Welcome to my second part of introducing some new mates!

On this Post I want to introduce Christophe and Benjamin!

To start this post, I would like to act like one of my teachers. For some name reasons, I don't to mention any unimportant names, but it was in the Object Oriented Programming in Java Part I Course:

The doors get open, all the busy students are sitting in the room, checking out some new stuff on 9Gag...Just for fun,  or how to sell your soul and your dates for Facebook..the great personal data selling media network, well to sum it up, everybody could just as motivated as it is possible in the cold morning at 8 am.

the first words of the teacher, after setting up the projector,  Okay...Let's check this attendence list first,  do we have "Mouschschschschschsche" here?..."Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannna"...isn't here, "Christopheeeeeee"....is here,  "Bennnnnjamin"....is here...Do we have "Luxingtschiiii" here?... well okay , and "Claaaaaudio" is also here.
I don't know how, but it didnt depends, if I was there or not [ I only missed the lesson 2 times ]...I was all the time considered as to be there, it was no question, it was a matter of fact.

For a better imagination, how this could be sounding like, I just perform it for you guys:

Well as we no know , that Benjamin and Christophe are here, I would like to introduce you to those charming guys.

Christophe and Benjamin
Name: Benjamin
Nickname: Venix
Home Country: Belgium
Home City: Nothomb
Course of studies: Information Technology
So tell us something interesting about Germany: "Germans are friendly, and crazy at the same time.
So tell us something interesting about the language:
"GERMAN, is the only language, in which you can scare someone really heavy with out shouting or yelling to someone"

Would you like to add something interesting about Germany culture: "German beer is not as good as the Belgium beer"

For myself, I think it is worth to say,  "Challenge accepted".

But it is very interesting to know, how hard and strict the german language sounds :) good to know that we are still scary :) Thanks for the interesting thoughts :)

So, let s move on with the next one...let me introduce to you:

Name: Christophe
Nickname: Lapinou
Home Country: Belgium
Home City: Saint-Marc
Course of studies: Information Technology
What do you want to tell us about the lovely country Germany: Three words only,
"Sympathy, Honesty and Punctuality".

That are some wise words,  thanks for it :)

Benjamin and Christophe are not only my mates, living in the same appartment like I,  they are some really cool guys. On the one side, the help me to regain my french speaking ability skills. It s always a try and a walk through hell for me, when I am searching for a french word in my head.

Mais, je voudrais de parler merci a vous!
Christophe,  is guiding us for the right way :)

And of course,  the most interesting word in french for me is still: "           Ce qui est-ce que c'est passé"

Oh look, what is in the right corner? Oh yes, it is of course, C'est qui  c'est passé :)

Another good thing is, that I have the most study courses of the Information Technology together with them, so they can often help me, when I m not ready into the busines off thinking like a Informatician :) Thank you guys for this!

Introducing I...Nacho

Hyvää Iltaa!

In this post, I would like to introduce to you some of my new friends. I thought that I can represent at least some interesting things about them, their life, and of course their opinion about Germany, the germans, or the german culture :) so here it goes:

The first one I would like to introduce to you, is one guy, you may have recognized him of some pictures of my blog. I first met him on my first day here in Rovaniemi. He is living as a neighbor next to my flat.

Let me introduce to you...

Man, you look awesome!  Could be a thinking engineer :)

Name:                                                              Ignacio
Nickname:                                                        Nacho ( yes like the cookies :) )
Home Country:                                                 Argentinia [ the only one ]
Home City:                                                       Castelar
Course of Studies:                                            Journalism

Things you should know about him: He has already published one book, but I m not able to speak spanish, Fabio, maybe you have to teach me some spanish after your stay in Valencia :) ]
But luckily he is on the best way to learn some german, because he is always surrounded by at least  some germans, like Sebi, Nina, or myself.
His german abilities has improved his lifequality significantly with using the words like "Ja, ich weiß", "Prost", "Ja, schlagen...die Schlampe".
Actually, we try to teach him some original stuff, like

 "oans zwoa gsuffa"(one, two, drunk),
"Kerle, Mach dassd Hoim komsch"("Look, that you are gonna be home soon dude" ; and in formal german: "Es ist besser für dich, wenn du nun schnell nach Hause gehst")
and finally:
"SAUF NEI ALTER" ( "Better drink now dude!")

but to be honest, he is on a very good way to learn german, of course not on purpose, "Not trying to", am I right Nacho? :)

What he thinks about Germany: Beer, Nazis, his Grandmother; DIE TOTEN HOSEN...

Well, he was the first person I got to know, so thanks for the awesome time, talks, all that party fun stuff etc. dude!
And let's rock Tivoli tomorrow(another club in Rovaniemi,  report about the clubbing action will be updated soon)

Culture Connected Customer Services...

Hey mates,  how is it goin?

I am actually very busy this week, so you I ll hope you will survive the waiting time until the next blog update will come( I think I can make it at the end of the week, if I am not stuck in some parties/girls actions ).

rising sun in Rovaniemi at 7.50 am

To shorten the waiting time,  I would like to share with you first,  one of a taken picture of the rising sun in the morning in Rovaniemi.

It was fuckin cold that day, but a lovly start in the day!

the new bridge of Rovaniemi ( one time I have to look up the original name of the bridge )

And secondly, I would like to ask you,  WHAT IS CULTURE?  Feel free to comment on this entry, and don't forget to mail me the answers of my little Quiz, if you want to receive something interesting of Finland :)

The following text is taken out of an essay, which I had to write for my new course,  started this week,  called "Culture Connected Customer Services".
Feel free to read it, and to comment on it!

Greetings,
Claudio
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the following Assignment, I would like to share my opinion and thoughts about which definition of culture I would prefer or consider as the most acceptable for myself. In the next abstract, I would like to try to define culture in my own words and finally, I would appreciate to talk about possible answers to the Question, why are there so many definitions of culture existing today.
In my opinion, the definition of culture as “A set of beliefs or standards shared by a group of people, which help the individual to decide what is, what can be, how to feel, what to do and how to go about doing it.”, made by Goodenough in the year 1971 appeals the most for me. I have chosen this definition, because it facilitates this abstract and complex expression called culture. It also makes it more easier to understand and to get an simple idea and overview about its dimensions and about what could be meant by answering the question about what culture is.“A set of beliefs or standards”, this introducing line sounds for me like several guidelines or a bundle of rules and restrictions, which can lead you through society and life. I totally agree with considering culture as a set of beliefs or standards, because I think, that everyone in the world needs at least something, in which he can trust, fall back, or gain some power of it to survive in today’s world, or just to successfully manage some of your life’s problems.
I partly agreed on the definition of culture, saying, that culture “Is the way in which people solve problems”, made by Trompenaars in the year 1999. But in my personal opinion, I would not only consider Culture as the way of solving problems, because culture also can exist when there are no problems existing. This definition is not enough for me, that’s why I have chosen the definition of Goodenough.
In this first part of my assignment, I was reflecting my thoughts about existing definitions of culture. Now I would like to move on to share my imagination of culture, the way how I would define culture.
I see culture as a dynamic way of express yourself, as a changing challenge and opportunity to clarify yourself into any kind of society or life. By setting up your own culture, mankind is able to perceive what kind of self-defined type you can appear. If we hide the first circumstances, that your surrounding (weather, political system, expected society…) has an great impact on your culture, then I think it is possible to remark, that it is mostly up to you to be what you want to be, and express it yourself by your culture. It is all up to you, what kind of sports, hobbies, habits, manners etc. you want to be seen as your culture. My next point I want to mention is, that for me, culture contains everything of your existing you, your past-you, your future-you, and all of your imaginary perceptions of which you can dream of.
To clarify…with the use of this expression, I would like to consider culture, as a possibility to set up your place into your life, society or whatever. Culture can help you when it comes to finding solutions not only for upcoming problems, for all kind of your expected and contrived challenges in which you are in. It can be a guideline to achieve a goal, to manage things out with people, or just to find a secure and an acceptable (for you) place in life and society. I also want to mention, that culture shouldn’t be considered as an open-wide system, which allows you to get access to all and everything. Culture contains also your self-set up restrictions to delimitate yourself and your culture, to also distinguish yourself from other existing cultures.
With the words “dynamic” and “changing”, I would like to mention, that this is not a static way of interpreting culture. Your way how you would like to express yourself stays not the same over the time, so your culture should be able to adapt to the changes. By saying this, I would like to highlight the point, that culture can undergo a process of adapting and changing. So it can not be seen as a static point of view. To bring up an good evidence and also an small example to maintain this idea, is to speak of being an Exchange student, who’s culture might undergo some changes.
In this second part of my assignment, I gave you an insight in the my thoughts about concerning the definition of culture, and what it could be. In my last part of my assignment, I would like to establish some connections to my former thoughts to find an appropriate answer to the following question:
“Why do you think there are so many definitions of culture?”
In my opinion, culture isn’t restricted to be anything. I would say that culture can contain any information, which a single person, a group of persons, several societies or just any possible of mankind can imagine. There are so many individuals living on the earth and everyone can bring up his own way of expressing himself. Everyone is able to set up his own thoughts and ideas about what culture can include and consists of.
As I have already mentioned before, for me, culture is able to adapt to any kind of changes,. By changes, I don’t want to set a limit to imagination of what could change, but to say it directly, changes can affect the culture of every individual, and as long as they can affect it, there will be also several interpretations and ways of defining yourself into life and society and to cope with changes.
To summarize it, this essay about the question “What is culture?” cannot contain every possible idea about culture, it only reflects my own arguments and opinion about this interesting topic. But in the expression “culture”, there is a lot of more and more in it as you might ever can imagine!

Open Sea at Oulu

In this post, I would like to forget about all that snow,

which is actually covering Rovaniemi.
I would prefer to report about my trip to the open sea in Oulu. For me, it was my second visit in Oulu.

Our journey began after a short party night at 11 am in the morning. Everyone(Lula,Dahny,Sebi:Germany,Nacho:Argentinia and Myself) were a little bit absent-minded, except of our driver Nina(Germany).

our transport car..very nice :)
It took us about 3 and a half hours of driving, luckily there was enough space to rest for a while.
In Oulu, the weather was a mix of raining and a little bit cloudy sun.
City Center in Oulu
Our plan was to go a little bit through the city, visit the open sea, and later on have a good meal with the oppertunity to go out and rock the clubs in Oulu.

Lula, Nina, Dahny, Sebi and Nacho
Every day, we loose about 5 minutes in the morning, and 5 minutes in the evening concerning the duration of sunlight appearing on a day.

a random stree in Oulu. Reminds me a little bit of Constance

We weren't in a hurry, but it was a 1h walk to the open sea.

As you can see on the picture, the sun was already going down and hiding behind a wall of mixing vapour and clouds. After 1 and a half hour of walking, we finally made it to the open sea. It took more time than expected to go their, but it was a nice walk through many city parks and along some islands.
the water was very cold
the open sea
Unluckily I had not a towel with me, otherwise I would have gone swimming, or atleast have done a picture laying down on the beach.

open sea 2
To test my front camera of my mobile phone, and of course to have at least one evidence, that I was on the open Sea in Oulu, I would like to close this post with a self-made picture of me :)

So, I can imagine, that you don't have any snow in your countries right now at the moment,  but feel free to enjoy some snowy pictures on the next blog entries, maybe already get some christmas mood, or maybe start thinking:" What the hell could I just buy as a present for all my lovely people around me for christmas?"

And I have to introduce you a very good friend /some good friends of mine I made in Finland on the next blog post, the namesare "...surprise",  so have a nice time!

Lovely Greetings

Claude

I will never complain...

In-Time-Update:  it is snowing in Rovaniemi :)

This picture shows the snow fall of 20 min,  let s see how it will look like later on the day.
I have the impression, that it wouldn't stop snowing today.

After one hour, the same road:  to be precisely:  16th of October, 4.25 pm GMT +2

4.25 pm at the 16 th of October 2012
Later on that day, Nacho and I decided to go to the city center, to buy some things, and of course, enjoy the cold winter.

the new bridge of Rovaniemi
In between 2 hours, the whole city was covered by snow. By meaning snow,  i mean snow,  and not that typically mix of snow-water-dirt...you expect in Germany as a first snow.

LORDI's Square in snow!
